New Member Series: NHI building partnerships that last
For more than 35 years, NHI has played a quiet but influential role in shaping the Large Format Retail landscape across Australia.
Established by Noel Holman and now led by his son Ben, the family‑run business has built its reputation on integrity, consistency, and a simple guiding principle: deliver practical, high‑quality building solutions while treating every client relationship as a genuine partnership.
That approach has seen NHI grow from modest beginnings into a trusted national partner for some of the country’s most recognisable retailers.
“We pride ourselves on the ability to manage complex, multi‑site while still keeping a personal, hands-on approach,” said Ben Holman, Managing Director, NHI Group. “Because we have our own manufacturing facilities, dedicated project teams, and a trusted network of subcontractors, we have the capability to deliver tenancy splits, refurbishments, and large-scale retail and office fit‑outs across multiple states simultaneously while maintaining quality.
“Good planning and clear communication are at the heart of every project and everything we do. No matter the size of the job, every project gets the attention it deserves. From the first design discussions to final handover, our focus is on keeping programs on track, compliant, and finished to a consistently high standard.”
This disciplined approach has earned NHI long‑standing client relationships such as with Beacon Lighting, Kitchen Warehouse, The Good Guys, and Spotlight.
Beacon Lighting, in particular, has worked with NHI for nearly two decades. What began with a handful of fit‑outs has grown into a national relationship which has seen NHI deliver Beacon Lighting’s stores but also the design and manufacture of all joinery and fixtures in‑house. By keeping production local, NHI maintains tighter control over quality, timelines, and costs, helping Beacon achieve efficiency without compromise.
Each partnership has helped NHI refine its understanding of the Large Format Retail sector’s unique demands, accelerated delivery schedules, and complex tenancy coordination.
“Beyond construction, our full suite of services are tailored to retail, from design management and cost planning to end‑to‑end project delivery,” adds Mr Holman, “Our years of experience in refurbishment have also taught us how to stage works carefully, keeping stores open and sales flowing while upgrades are completed. For our clients, that expertise and attention to detail means NHI is more than a contractor, we are a partner committed their success.”
Innovation and sustainability are also central to how we operate,” said Mr Holman. “We’ve invested in modern machinery and advanced project management software, to improve documentation, safety, and quality assurance. At the same time, we integrate environmentally responsible practices, from waste reduction and recycled materials to energy efficient lighting and HVAC systems. These initiatives reduce delays and rework but also support both commercial and environmental goals.”
NHI’s commitment also extends into the community. The business actively supports local sporting clubs and schools, investing in youth development and wellbeing. For NHI, teamwork and collaboration are values that apply as much off the building site as they do on it.
As a second‑generation family business, the company remains focused on building long‑term partnerships and projects that stand the test of time and growing its skilled workforce alongside its projects, to ensure its legacy of quality, reliability, and partnership continues for years to come.
NHI’s membership with the Large Format Retail Association marks an exciting new chapter, strengthening ties with Australia’s Large Format Retail Sector.
