rebel opens Tasmania’s biggest store as expansion plans gather pace
Super Retail Group’s rebel has opened its largest store in Tasmania, bringing a new 3,000 sqm flagship retail experience to Hobart’s CBD as the sporting retailer continues to expand its national network.
Located at the former H&M site in Murray Street, the new two-level store represents a significant investment in Hobart’s CBD, creating more than 40 jobs and offering the widest range of sports equipment and apparel in the state.
The store is rebel’s second rCX (rebel Customer Experience) format store in Tasmania, designed to bring a more interactive shopping experience to customers.
Among its features is a dedicated football experience zone, where customers can handball and kick a football before making a purchase.
The store also stocks Tasmanian Devils guernseys and teamwear, alongside an extensive range of sporting equipment and apparel across AFL, cricket, basketball and other popular sports.
rebel Managing Director Jenny Child said the new flagship reflected the retailer’s confidence in Tasmania and the growing enthusiasm for sport ahead of the state’s first AFL team’s arrival.
“The new store will be a go-to destination for Tasmanians who love sport, bringing together an incredible range of the biggest and most popular sports, brands and products under one roof,” Ms Child said.
“We know how passionate Tasmanians are about sport and with the state’s first AFL team on the horizon, there’s never been a more exciting time to open a store of this scale in Hobart.
“We’re committed to being the home of sport in Australia and we are thrilled to have revitalised this fantastic CBD space where we can offer a whole range of products and experiences for the first time in Tasmania.”
The new Hobart flagship brings rebel’s Tasmanian store network to three, joining existing stores at Rosny Park and Launceston.
The opening comes as rebel outlines plans to significantly expand its regional store network over the next five years.
According to Ms Child, the rollout of key CBD locations and new regional stores will be a major driver of growth for the retailer.
“From local footy and netball clubs to parkrun, sport is a significant part of the community fabric in towns across Australia,” she said.
“The majority of our new store growth over the next five years is planned in regional Australia, making rebel the go-to destination for sport no matter where our customers live and play.”
By June 2031, rebel plans to expand its regional network from 39 to 70 stores, incorporating a mix of rCX stores, foundation stores and smaller-format locations.
The Hobart opening also coincides with the introduction of rebel’s rebel rookies program to Tasmania for the first time in October, offering school holiday sports skills camps for children aged six to 12.
